Welcome to the world of wild horses and burros (and mules!) in Florida. Here you will learn about the mustangs and burros of the Old West. Many Floridians have adopted them from the Bureau of Land Management, which is charged with protecting them in 10 western states.

OUR MISSION: The specific purpose of this corporation is to develop and carry out educational and mentoring programs for personal participation in the US Department Of Interior, Bureau Of Land Management, (BLM) animal adoption programs, to promote good horsemanship, humane training practices and safe equine handling in general, as well as to provide volunteer assistance to the BLM. We will promote successful adoptions, provide pre-adoption information, support and assist new adopters and owners of BLM horses and burros, through a statewide network of members.

This site is not directly affiliated with the Bureau of land management and is not a Bureau of Land Management sponsored site.

Training and gentling information is provided with the understanding that the reader accepts the responsibility for exercising good judgment and caution for applying any information on this site to his/her particular situation. Be sure to check our Events! page whenever you drop in -- we update it regularly with local clinics, BLM adoptions, and more.

Pictures of the Developing Partnerships Clinic, combining the talents of two masters in one weekend -- Frank Bell & Donna Maye West, are on the Events page. You'll also find our reports on the New Brockton, Alabama, BLM adoption, the Delmarva Mustang and Burro Savvy Days and our own Developing a Better Partnership with your Horse Clinic. PLUS! Two of our members, Gwilda Byrd and Sandra Schluter adopted at New Brockton -- see their new mustangs! All on the Events page.

Check out our Articles section, which includes Estimating Donkey Weight, Mustang Hooves: How to Care for Them, Saddle Fit, Freeze Branding, and NEW! Fishing For Mustangs.

Try our Mustangs and Burros Quiz! Test your knowledge... and keep trying by reloading the page if you don't score high enough (6) to get to the next page.... It has the answers and explanations of them. (We're sorry, but currently the quiz does not work for most Netscape browsers... we're working on it!)
Check our Who We Are page, with short biographies and pictures of our Board.

Join our Mailing List and meet other Florida mustang owners, get tips and advice, and share stories about your mustangs and burros. To join, just send an e-mail to flwildhorsesandburros-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

COOKBOOK: We finally have a fund raiser, and is it ever a great one! We asked people on several wild horses mailing lists for their favorite recipes, and created a wonderful COOK BOOK! (click to see the cover) There are some great recipes for campfire cooking, home cooking, salads, treats for your equine friends, fly spray recipes, and even a dog bone recipe! There is also some good wild horse web site info. All proceeds go to the Florida Wild Horse and Burro Association - send $10 + $2 for shipping to by check or money order to:

Some plans for future features: We will highlight some Florida mustangs and their owners, telling how they came to pick their horse (or their horse picked them!), how they succeeded in gentling the horse, and what they use their horse for now. We'll delve into the world of the burros and what people find for them to do besides amusing them (hint: they are great at protecting sheep!). And we'll check in with some mules born in the wild (it does happen!) and some who are half-mustang or half-wild burro.

We also will be able to help new adopters, as some of us are Wild Horse Mentors. And we have some links to very helpful wild horse and burro sites on the net.

A word from our Director/Founder:

Another busy year has passed already! We were honored last November 2004 to be part of the first annual Florida Equestrian Celebration at the new equestrian facility in Jacksonville. Diane Delano was a featured clinician and provided several very educational presentations. It was another wonderful opportunity to show off our Mustangs and educate a large cross section of the public. We are honored to have been invited back again this fall. (www.floridaequestrian.com)

Since the Burns Rider to the Federal Appropriations Bill passed in December 2004, our members have been tirelessly advocating on behalf of wild horses and burros to support an appeal of the rider (which allows "excess" wild horses and burros to be sold without limitation) and a ban on horse slaughter in this country. To date, the fight continues. (For more info go to: http://www.aowha.org/).

Sandra, Eddie and the South Florida Mustang Club had their annual booth at the South Florida Fair in January. It was a wonderful opportunity to educate the public but also showcase a very talented group of Mustangs.

This year we have continued to provide an informational presence at and volunteer support for BLM adoptions in our state. Of note, at the May adoption in Marianna, the BLM brought in a wild mule. He was dubbed "incorrigible" by the BLM folks and wranglers. No one adopted him so I did and he is turning out really well. The May adoption was attended by many members of the National Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. Their upcoming meeting was in Tallahassee.

We will soon be introducing a fund-raising auction on Ebay, and are in the planning stages for a Mustang Awareness Day prior to the Marianna adoption in the spring of next year. A benefit ride is also being planned so stay tuned for more information as those plans are firmed up.

We are also in the process of joining forces with Least Resistance Training Concepts 'LRTC'. Our goals and missions are similar so this will be a mutually beneficial relationship. Visit them on the web at: http://www.kbrhorse.net/ or http://www.whmentors.org

In October a group of our members and friends met at the Cross Florida Greenway near Ocala to camp and trail ride together. Looks like this is becoming an annual event! November will be the annual Wild Horse Workshop in Texas and we're proud that Diane will be a clinician again this year. We're also proud of the newspaper coverage we've gotten this year: articles by the Florida Times-Union/Jacksonville Journal, Tallahassee Democrat as well as the West Palm Beach paper. Maria will be having an interview with the paper from Niceville, as well! I'm so happy to have all these great people in Florida (and a few helping from out of state!) working and helping America's Living Legends! Adopt a Wild Horse or Burro! You will have the time of your life, and they will teach you things about yourself you never knew!
